So,
House one;:
In the end of the summer to the beginning of the school year, they had an older Bassett which was given from a friend. After owning it for a few months [around the time of November] they got rid of the dog. Reason being; "He didn’t want to play with our son." He was about 9 years old, was blind in one eye, and was always a calm dog. Why they took the dog, thinking it would play with their child, I don’t know.
A month and a half later, they get a Border Collie pup. The dog played with their son, stayed outside all day [same with the Bassett] from around 5am – around 10pm. Had a dog house, was on a zip-line, had food and water [so it was pretty sound out there "needs wise"]. After 4 months they get rid of it. Reason being, "the dog was too destructive in the house and never stopped looking for attention while we were sleeping." Ok. Being outside for all but 7 hours, alone, with no toys; why wouldn’t it want to play inside with the pack for those 7 hours you tried to sleep?
My knowledge source: Their nephew, also their neighbour, is a close friend of mine.
House two;:
Currently has a 2 year old Golden Retriever, as well as an 11 year old Chow Chow. Both from breeders.
Occasionally allows their daughter/son-in-law to bring over a 3 year old Basenji mix [originally theirs, but after being "too destructive" gave to their daughter]. All are kept outside, while they’re visiting, in a 15′x15′ fenced in [chain-link] yard.
The Golden Retriever has aggression issues, barks non-stop at everything, and has attacked a neighbour once [bit hand, drew small amounts of blood].
The Chow Chow is timid, has been dominated by the Golden Retriever and is frequently attacked by it, and before the Golden was bought, it had attacked another neighbour two times, as well as other guests; drew blood every time.
The Basenji mix dominates the Golden Retriever, but submits to the Chow Chow, and has gotten the Golden Retriever into the habit of dragging pillows/cushions/shoes/fake legs into the yard and chewing on them. [Which gets him, literally, beaten.]
All are males, none are neutered. All, except for the Chow, feel the need to break through the fence about twice a month in order to get to our JRT x APBT when she’s outside for walks/on the cable.
My knowledge source: Immediate access to their fenced in yard, as well as past history of being friends.
House three:;
Owns 7 dogs. 4 Chihuahuas, one Manchester Terrier, one Maltese, and one Pomeranian. None are walked. Their fenced in enclosure is 10′x15′ but is crowded with their childrens’ toys and junk. 2 of the Chihuahuas, as well as the Maltese are only allowed access to that part outside of the house. The other 4 dogs are allowed access to the rest of the lawn, which is around a quarter of an acre behind their house. The dogs wander off while the owners are gardening/burning trash, up into our lawn, as well as down into the adjacent lawn, and further into the side-street.
The dogs continuously fight with each other, and have attacked their kids [they have 3 children in the house, along with the dogs, four adults, and two teenagers].
The owners have been called upon repeatedly by not only my own household, but other households because of property damage, dog fights [our main reason], and attacks toward humans.
The owners complied and either got rid of a few of the dogs they had, took them to a training class or two, or have euthanized the ones that repeatedly were called upon for human aggression. They didn’t allow their dogs out roaming for a few months after a call; but after the heat was over, they would allow the dogs back out, go get the dogs they got rid of, and got more dogs to "make up" for the euthanized ones.
My knowledge source;: Community meetings, one of them being my mother’s co-worker, along with one of them occasionally going to my school.
So.
Sorry for the long descriptions.
Back to the question:;
Have you ever had/currently have neighbours and/or friends that were like this, dog-wise [or perhaps another pet, that would be interesting to hear as well]?
What was the scenario like? What happened? Was it over-come/changed?
Cheers.
[p.s. -- can't wait until I have enough money to buy my own land and be free from neighbours. *sigh* bliss.]
Beautica — Oh, I have called our local dog shelter [whom handles the cases, inspects, and then furthers them to the authorities] multiple times. Usually *right* when it happens. But there’s never a mark on the dog, other than it’s aggressive behaviour — so there’s nothing they can do.
Lindsay –
Grow up. Please. Considering I give a sh*te about dogs, and I have to *live* with the dogs’ problems, behaviours, and the owners’ treatment of them — yeah, it kind of is my business.
You probably couldn’t tell a pile of dog sh*te from a barn, the way you answer questions.
Chaos — cheers, you have no idea how many times my dad has used those exact words for dogs of small breeds in similar situations. "That little [insert breed] would be dead in a second." It’s good that your dad wasn’t attacked, and neither was your dog.
Abbie — You have no idea how much it annoyed me as well. I would have been *glad* to help them with the dog, instead of them just dumping it at the pound/giving it away. Now I’m extremely worried, though. They still have the zip line, but they now have a fenced in enclosure next to the back of their house. Which means they can get larger dogs. *prays*.
Dakota — how did you refrain from telling her off? That self control is much more than I could have had in that situation.
