How do you recover an outside umbrella?
I am considering buying fabric and covering outside chair cushions, but I want the umbrella to match. I need to know how to recover it very simply. I do have a sewing machine, but I don’t think I could handle something that big.

What you want/need is a fabric that will stand up to the sun. Contact a company that makes awnings or sails. Ever notice all the sailboats in a marina have BLUE covers on the main mast? It’s the best color to withstand constant sun exposure. Yes, the material is heavy…maybe the awning people or sailmaker will sew it for you.

Your local fabric store will carry fabric made just for this application. You do the umbrella in pieces. Use the existing covers as patterns, use kraft paper, found at craft or shipping stores, to trace and cut out as a pattern.

here is an idea that may work. try painting the existing umbrella cover, especially if it is an old one – in case it doesn’t work very well.

you could try to make a cover that just slips over the top of the umbrella ..
it’s not a hard thing to do ..first put the umbrella up and then make a paper pattern of one of the panels on the umbrella add an inch the the whole pattern then cut out the same amount of panels as you have on the umbrella sew together ..then hem the outer edge it’s not a huge job just a little bit arkward…
put the umbrella down and put the new cover over the top put unbrela back up and then adjust the cover to line up with originals ..on the end of umbrella put a couple of tight stitches in..
this way the cover can be removed if you want..
good luck..
